Basenjis are NOT hypoallergenic! While many websites claim they are...they are not! Some with Basenjis do well with those with allergies. I ALWAYS recommended potential owners meet and play with Basenjis. Oftentimes there are local groups that do meet-ups. Dog shows can also be a great way to meet basenjis.
Basenjis DO shed! We call it Basenji Glitter. When stressed they also blow their dander so then it's Basenji Snow. They tend to shed more twice a year with the seasons.
While they are barkeless they are by all means NOT mute! They can baroo, chuff, growl, say "woof", and when upset, they scream! Crate training can be difficult due to the screaming. Patience and being positive is key!
Basenjis are very catlike. If you don't like cats, this breed is not for you. What do I mean by that? Independent, self-groomers, self-thinkers, and will steal/destroy your toilet paper/tissues...hide the paper products. Some also don't like baths. They might climb the couches...climb up the bed.
They are believed to be the world's oldest dog breed and may have inspired the Egyptian God Anubis!
Couch = Basenji Throne.
They love to sunbathe. I always love it when homes have a dedicated sun spot for their Basenjis.
